OUR CO-OP: WHAT’S INSIDE?

Market - Our in-store market offers a rich variety of fresh produce, breads, meats, and value-added products such as locally roasted coffee beans, hand crafted teas and honeys, maple syrup, sunflower oil and so much more from local providers. Whether it’s on the shelf, in the freezer, in the market, used in the kitchen, or served from the Café the market foods are 75% sourced from local New York producers. Fair trade products like, sugar, oils, rice, and other international foods not grown or produced in New York State will also be carried by the Philmont Cooperative. We strive to put as much money back into the farmer’s pocket where a majority of each purchase is returned back to local farms and producers through a sophisticated labeling system which identifies the source of individual products.

68 - 75% of each dollar spent goes back to the person who grew or made the food.

Cafe - Our cafe provides hot breakfast, lunch and either hot or to-go dinner options. We strive to be a central community gathering location, especially in the warmer months when patrons can relax at our outdoor seating, we do have indoor seating as well, however it’s more limited.

The cafe buys directly from co-op producers to support seasonal and sustainable foods, to reduce waste, and to serve Philmont with the best food possible. It operates outdoors in our little green food truck in the warmer months and moves into our building when the weather gets cool.

Kitchen - Our kitchen is where many of the prepared food in our refrigerated and frozen showcases is made.  Through our programming and events we bring cooking and nutrition education to the community. We also rent our kitchen to bakers, chefs, and caterers who want to start, or grow their food business in a licensed 20C commercial kitchen. The Philmont Cooperative was founded in 2012 and developed by a collaborative team of residents, farmers, and business owners who believe in improving access to local food. We care about where food comes from, how it’s grown and how it’s made into value added products. We believe in strengthening community bonds through collaboration. Our Co-op will help produce a robust and equitable local economy.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY-BASED FOOD SYSTEM AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

At our market shoppers can find seasonal vegetables and fruit, dairy, meats, bread, fresh baked goods, honey, syrups, and more - the majority of which are sold directly from our network of producer/owners within a ten mile radius of the Co-Op.

Our co-op market helps local farmers expand their direct-market consumer base beyond their farm.  Consumers gain access to healthy food and their purchases bolster the local economy. This allows our farmers to spend more time involved directly with their farm and that in-turn can increase their productivity and increase sales to kitchen value-added producers which can help farmers reduce waste.

We work directly with our community of growers and producers who set up their own market displays so consumers can learn about what farm the food comes from, the growing practices used and the people who worked to bring it to you.

The Philmont Cooperative is based on a business model originally developed by Local Roots Cooperative in Wooster, Ohio, in 2009 with the help of small farmers. The model is dedicated to supporting a year-round direct-market where producers do not have to be on-site, allowing farmers to stay in their fields and gardens and expand production.

GROWING OUR CO-OP TOGETHER

Join us in building a year-round direct market that connects local producers with consumers. We're producing a robust local economy by promoting local farms, providing healthy foods, while revitalizing the village center.

Special thanks to Philmont Beautification, Inc., (PBI) for helping us Grow Our Co-op. PBInc a local non-profit community development organization, served on the collaboration team and turned a former gas station/convenience store into the current kitchen and Co-op. Through the support of local donors, matched with state and foundation grants, the store was re-purposed into a Co-op and commercial kitchen completed in 2017.

We hope you will consider becoming a member and joining us.

OUR MISSION

OPEN TO ALL

The Philmont Co-Op stands in solidarity with people of color in our community and our country who continue to be impacted by senseless brutality, systemic racism and social injustice. We strive to make the co-op a welcoming and safe place for all. This situation cannot be ignored any longer. We welcome your input and ideas for improvement.

Events and Community Involvement

Besides offering healthy food, it is the goal of the co-op to foster education and spirit within the Philmont community. To that end, the Philmont Cooperative will host events, including meet-ups, chef seminars, family and kids cooking classes, Free Community Dinners every Thursday night @ 4 PM. Experts in their fields will bring interested groups to the kitchen to demonstrate and lecture on topics of relevance to the community.  If you are interested in participating in any of these programs, call or email us to schedule your event.

Philmont Cooperative is a great place to meet, shop, eat and volunteer.
